Let’s understand each tool:

Undo

The Undo tool is used to undo the last change and return the image to its previous state. It is a fundamental utility that performs multiple times during an image manipulation task. GIMP supports multiple undo options so we can perform multiple undo operations and get the image to its earlier states.

To undo a change, select undo from the edit menu or stroke the CTRL+Z keys.

Redo

The Redo tool is opposite to undo; it will return the image to its next state (if any). The redo operations can reverse the undo operations. Just like undo, GIMP supports multiple redo operations. If you make any changes after the last undo operation, you will lose the previous redo steps.

To redo a undo operation, select redo from the edit menu or stroke the CTRL+Y keys.

Undo History

The Undo History tool lets see the done and undone operations. It displays a list of the most recently performed actions with a small sketch. You can select any state of the image from this list. The undo history panel can be seen at the below of the toolbox in the toolbox options. It will look like:

Cut

The cut tool is used to delete the selection or a part of the image, and save them in the clipboard. Later, it can be pasted using the paste option. If there is no specific selection, it will cut the entire layer. The area where the cut operation is performed will be left transparent if it has an alpha channel; otherwise, it will be filled with BG color.

To cut a selection, select the cut tool from the edit menu or stroke the CTRL+X keys.

Copy

The copy tool is used to copy the current selection and stores it in the clipboard. Later, it can be used by the paste option. If there is no selection, it will copy the entire layer. The copy action acts on the current layer. It will not work for the top or down layers.

To copy a selection, select the copy tool form the edit menu or stroke the CTRL+C keys.

Copy Visible

The Copy Visible tools are used to copy the content of visible layers. It is similar to copy but, it also copies the content except for the active layer.

To copy the visible content, select the copy visible option form the edit menu or stroke the SHIFT+CTRL+C keys.

Paste

The paste tool is used to paste the content from the clipboard stored by a copy or cut tool. The pasted selection is stored as a floating selection, which means it will be shown as a separate layer.

To paste the copied content, select the paste option from the editing menu or stroke the CTRL+V keys.

Paste In Place

The regular paste tool is used to place the content into the center of the canvas, but this tool is used to place the content at the exact coordinate location.

Paste Into Selection

The Paste Into Selection tool is used to place the content into a selection. It is similar to the paste tool; the difference is created if there is a selection within the image. If there is no selection, it will paste the data into the center of the canvas.

Paste Into In Place

The Paste Into In-Place tool is used to place the content at the exact coordinates; the content was initially copied. It pastes at the center of the selection. To activate the paste into in selection tool, select it from the edit menu.

Paste As

The paste as the command is also used to copy the content from the clipboard. But, it provides the following sub-options for pasting the contents:

  • New Layer In Place
  • New Image
  • New Brush
  • New Pattern

New Layer: It creates a new layer on the current image and places the content into it. If the selection is not in a specific shape, the edge that does not extend to the edge is left transparent. It will automatically create an alpha channel.

New Layer In Place: It is used to create a new layer and place it at the exact coordinates; the content was initially copied.

New Image: It is used to create a new image and place the copied data into it. If the selection is not in a specific shape, the edge that does not extend to the edge is left transparent. It will automatically create an alpha channel. It has the same behavior as the File → Create → From Clipboard tool.

New Brush: It opens a dialog window that allows us to name the new brush.

Buffer

Buffers are created when we cut or copy an image content; it is a temporary repository for image data. The Buffer tool is used to save the data in this buffer. The buffer tool provides the following option to store the content in the buffer:

  • Cut Named
  • Copy Named
  • Copy Visible Named
  • Pasted Named

Cut Named: It cuts the selection content from an active layer and stores it in a specific buffer instead of the clipboard.

Copy Named: It copies the selected content from an active layer and stores it in a specific buffer instead of the clipboard.

Copy Visible Named: It copies the selected content from all the visible layers and stores it in a specific buffer instead of the clipboard.

Pasted Named: The Pasted Named tool lists the buffers. By selecting one of the given buffers, we can paste it with different paste options such as paste buffer, paste buffer into, and paste buffer as new.

Clear

The clear tool is used to delete the content from the current selection. If there is no specific selection, it will cut the entire active layer. If the layer has an alpha channel, it will become transparent.

Fill With FG Color

The Fill with FG Color tool is used to fill the current selection with the current foreground color. The rest area will be unaffected.

In the above image, we have filled a selection with the current foreground color. To fill the selection with the current foreground color, select the fill with FG color option from the edit menu or Stroke the CTRL+COMMA(,) Keys.

Fill With BG Color

The Fill With BG Color tool is used to fill the current layer selection with the current background color. It will not affect the rest part of the image or layer. To fill the selection with current background color, select the fill with BG color option from the edit menu or stroke the CTRL+ DOT (.) Keys.

Fill With Pattern

The Fill With Pattern tool is used to fill the selected region with the available pattern in the pattern area of the toolbox. It will not affected the rest part of the image.

Fill Selection Outline

The Fill Selection Outline tool is usually grayed out. It is activated when a selection exists. It will pop up the below window:

The solid color option will choose the active foreground color, and the pattern option will choose the current active pattern to fill the selection.

Fill Path

The Fill Path tool is usually grayed out. It will be activated when a path exists. It fills all areas delimited by the path from the origin to the end.

Stroke Selection

The Stoke Selection tool is used to create a borderline on the selection. There are various options to make the stroke more specific. We can choose the stroke style. It will pop up a window for specifying the stroke style:

All

The Select All tool is used to create a new selection that contains everything on the current layer. To activate select all, select the select all tool from the select menu or stroke the CTRL+A keys.

None

The None tool cancels all the current selections. In the case of no selections, it will not do anything. To cancel all the selections, select the none option from the select menu or stroke the SHIFT+CTRL+A keys.

Invert

The Invert tool is used to invert the current selection in the active layer or image. It means that all the selected content which were outside the selection will be inside it and vice-versa. In the case of no selection, it will select the entire layer.

To invert the selection, select the invert option from the select menu or stroke the CTRL+I keys.

Float

The Float tool is used to convert a natural selection into a “floating selection.” A floating selection is similar to a layer. When we paste something, by default, it becomes a floating selection.

To float a selection, select the float option from the select menu or stroke the SHIFT+CTRL+L keys.

By Color

The Select By Color tool is used to select a similar color pattern. If you click on a color, it will select a similar color pattern part of the entire image. To select by color, select the by color option from the select menu or stroke the SHIFT+O keys.

From Path

The From Path tool is used to transform the current path into a selection. In the case of a disconnected path, the command will connect the endpoints with a straight line. In this scenario, the original path is unchanged. To select from the path, select the by path option from the select menu stroke the SHIFT+V keys.

Selection Editor

The Selection tool is used to display the “Selection Editor” dialog window. It displays the current selection in the current image and provides easy access to the selection-related tools. It is a handy tool while working on a selection. To activate the selection editor, select the selection editor option from the select menu.

Feather

The Feather tool is used to feather the edges of the selection. It is a handy tool for creating a smooth transition between the selection and its surroundings. Usually, it is used to feather the selection border with the “Feather Edges” option, but if you want to feature them again with this tool. To feather a selection, select the feather option from the select menu.

Sharpen

The Sharpen tool is used to reduce blur or fuzziness around the edge of a selection. It is a reverse tool of the Feather Selection tool. It is a handy tool for image editing; The new edge selection follows the dotted line of the old edge selection. In the sharpen tool, the Anti-aliasing is also removed. To activate the sharpen tool, select the sharpen option from the select menu.

Shrink

The Shrink tool is used to reduce the size of the selected area. It moves each point on the edge of the selection a precise distance further away from the nearest edge of the image.

To shrink a selection, select the shrink option from the select menu. It will open a dialog window for asking the shrinking value. Enter the value by which you want to shrink the selection.

Grow

The Grow tool expands the size of a selection in the current image. It is just opposite to the shrink tool but works similarly. To expand a selection, select the grow option from the select menu. It will open a dialog window for asking the growing value. Enter the value by which you want to grow the selection.

Border

The Border tool is used to create a new selection along the edge of an existing selection. The edge of the current selection acts as a base of the border; the new selection is created around it. To create a border selection, select the border tool from the select menu. It will open a dialog window and ask for the border values. Enter the value by which you want to create a border selection.

Remove Holes

The Remove Hole tool is used to remove the holes of a selection. Generally, the holes are the unselected or partially selected areas in the selection. To remove the holes from a selection, select the remove holes option from the select menu.

Distort

The Distort tool is used to deform the selection contour. The contour is an outline, especially of a curving or irregular figure.

To activate the distort tool, select the distort option from the select menu. It will open a popup window. Enter the values by which you want to distort the selection.

The distortion values have the following four options:Threshold: If the threshold value is higher, it will shrink the distorted selection. If the value is lower, It will make the selection bigger.

Spread: The higher value of Spread increases the deformation.

Granularity: The higher value of Granularity increases the deformation.

Smooth: The higher value of Smooth decreases the deformation.

The Deactivation of Smooth horizontally or Smooth vertically increases the deformation.

Rounded Rectangle

The Rounded Rectangle tool is used to convert an existing selection (rectangular, elliptical, or other shapes) into a rectangular selection with rounded corners. To activate the rounded rectangle tool, select the rounded rectangle option from the select menu.

Toggle quick Mask

The quick Mask is used partially to paint a selection. To toggle the quick Mask, select the quick mask menu from the select menu or stroke the SHIFT+Q keys.

Save To Channel

The Save to Channel tool is used to save the selection as a channel. The channel can be used as a channel selection mask.

To activate the save to channel task, navigate it by the select the menu.

To Path

The To Path tool is used to convert a selection into a path. The image will not be changed, but the new path can be seen in the Paths Dialog. It is a handy tool for precisely adapt the outline of the selection. To activate the to path tool, select it from the select menu.

GIMP View Menu

New View

The New View tool is used to create a new image window for the current image. GIMP provides the option to create many views of any image. The changes made in one window can be seen in the other except the changes in the view. The new views do not create separate image files; they are a different aspect of the same image. Instead, it is useful for analyzing the effects of the changes on the image.

To create a new view. Select the new view option from the view menu.

Show All

The Show All option is utilized to make noticeable all pixels that are spilling off the canvas limit and typically remove the picture. It is useful for dragging the new layers, new pictures outside the canvas incidentally to work with them.

Dot For Dot

It is used to activate and deactivate the “Dot for Dot” mode. If this mode is activated and the zoom factor is 100%, it will display every pixel in the image as a single pixel on the window. If it is disabled, it will display the real size of the image.

The dot for dot mode is useful if you are working on icons and web graphics. For the printable images, we should disable it. To activate the dot for dot mode, select the dot for dot option from the view menu.

Zoom

It contains different options for manipulating the image’s magnification in the image window. Enlarging an image is useful for high precision work, pixel-level image modifications, or other precise selections. Comparatively, reducing an image is useful for getting an overall changes of the image and analyzing the factors that may affect the entire image. Zooming does not affect the image data, so it is not undoable.

The zoom menu contains the following sub-menu:

  • Revert Zoom
  • Zoom Out
  • Zoom In
  • Fit Image in Window
  • Fill Window
  • Zoom to Selection
  • Other Zooming aspects

Revert Zoom: The revert zoom option is used to reset the zoom factor to the previous value. If there are no changes in the zoom factor, it will be insensitive and grayed out.

Zoom Out: The zoom out option decreases the zoom factor by about 30 %.

Zoom In: The zoom-in option increases the zoom factor by 30%.

Fit Image in Window: It is used to zoom the image as possibly large, But keep adjusted it within the window.

Fill Window: It is used to zoom possibly large the image without requiring any padding to be displayed.

Zoom to Selection: It is used to zoom the picture so the selection can fit the smallest view of the window.

Other Aspects: apart from all the above options, there are also some other zooming options are available, they will zoom the image accordingly.

Flip & Rotate

The flip and rotate tool is used to reposition an image according to the rotate and flip angle. It provides the following tools to flip and rotate.

  • Reset Flip & Rotate
  • Flip Horizontally
  • Flip Vertically
  • Rotate 15 degrees clockwise
  • Rotate 15 degrees counter-clockwise
  • Rotate 90 degrees clockwise
  • Rotate 90 degrees counter-clockwise

Center Image in Window

The Center Image in Window tool is used to keep the current image in the center of the opening window.

Shrink Wrap

It is used to resize the window so that it can be adjusted to the same size as the current zoom factor. It is useful for enlarging the screen for viewing the most significant part of the image. To activate the shrink wrap tool, select it from the view menu or stroke the CTRL+J keys.

Full Screen

The Fullscreen tool is used to display the image window on the entire screen. We can exit from this mode as well by selecting this again. It will not manipulate the image size. The full-screen mode disables the menu bar, but we can access it by right-clicking on the image.

To enable the full-screen mode, select the full-screen option from the view menu, or press the F11 key.

Navigation Window

It is used to open the navigation window. The navigation window provides quick navigation for the image, such as crop the image quickly, set zoom levels, and many more tasks. To activate the navigation window, select the navigation window option from the view menu.

Display Filters

The Display Filters tool displays a dialog window for managing the display filters and their options. The display filters and filters are two different things; It does not manipulate the image data. Usually, the display filter changes the perception of the image. It is useful for soft proofing prints, color management.

The Color Management tool is used for managing the colors and soft-proofing. To activate this tool, select the color management option from the view menu.

Show Selection

The Show Selection tool is used to enable and disable the displaying of the selection in the current image. However, the selection will exist if displaying of the selection line is disabled. To enable or disable the view of the selection, select or deselect the show selection option from the view menu or stroke the CTRL+T keys.

Show Layer Boundary

It is used to activate and deactivate the display of the layer boundary that is surrounded by a yellow dotted line.

Show Guides

The Show Guides tool is used to enables and disables displaying of Guides in the image window. To display the guides, select the show guides option from the view menu or stroke the SHIFT+CTRL+T keys.

Show Grid

The Show Grid option is used to enable or disable the grid. At the point when the show Grid is activated, it will overlay the picture and makes it simpler for us to arrange chosen picture components.

Let’s understand each tool in detail:

Duplicate

The Duplicate tool is used to create a current copy of the image. It copies the exact image with all of its layers, channels, and paths without affected the clipboard and history. To duplicate an image, select the duplicate option from the Image menu or stroke the CTRL+D keys. The duplicate image will be opened in a new window.

Mode

The Mode tool is used to change the color mode of the image. There are the following three modes are available in GIMP:

  • RGB
  • Gray Scale
  • Indexed

To select a mode, select the mode option in the Image menu.

The RGB tool converts image in RGB color options.

The Gray Scale tool converts the image in Gray Scale color options.

The Indexed tool converts the image in indexed color options.

Precision

The tool is used to change the precision of the image. The precision defines the quality, condition, and fact for being accurate. This tool affects the precision and channel encoding, which is used to store the image in RAM during processing.

The Precision sub-menu contains the following tools:

  • 8-bit integer
  • 16-bit integer
  • 32-bit integer
  • 16-bit floating integer
  • 32-bit floating integer
  • Perceptual gamma (sRGB)
  • Linear Light

To select any of the above precision tools, select it from the image-> Precision menu. It offers some integer, floating precision options and channel encoding options.

Color Management

The Color Management tools are used to change the ICC color profile associated with an image. Further, it allows us to save the associated ICC color profile to disk. There are the following options available in the Color Management submenu.

  • Enable Color Management
  • Assign Color Profile
  • Convert to Color Profile
  • Discard Color Profile
  • Save Color Profile to File

Enable Color Management: This tool allows us to assigns a GIMP built-in sRGB color space to our image.

Assign Color Profile: This tool is used to assign a new ICC profile to an image.

Covert to Color Profile: This tool is used to transform an image from its current color profile to another profile.

Discard Color Profile: This tool is used to disable the image’s currently assigned color profile.

Save Color Profile to File: This tool is used to save to disk a copy of the ICC profile that’s assigned to our image.

Transform

The Transform tool is used to transform the image by flipping it, rotating it, or cropping it. The transform sub-menu provides the following options:

  • Flip Horizontally
  • Flip Vertically
  • Rotate 90 degrees clockwise
  • Rotate 90 degrees counter-clockwise
  • Rotate 180 degree
  • Arbitrary Rotation

To use any of the above transformations, select it from the image-> transform menu.

Canvas Size

It is the entire visible area of the image. By default, it coincides with the layer’s size. The canvas size can be resized by using this option.

The canvas size tool opens a window for defining and reducing the canvas size.

Reducing the image size causes the new canvas to be surrounded by the image. We can adjust the image with this frame by clicking and dragging on the image against this frame.

Fit Canvas to Layers

It is used to accept the canvas size to the size of the most significant layer in the image. When we create a new image, the canvas size will be the same as the image size. It will not change if new layers are added. If we want to add a more substantial layer than the image size, we have to use it to show the whole layer.

To use this tool, select it from the image menu.

Fit Canvas to Selection

It is used to adapt the canvas size to the size of the current image. It will adjust the image in both width and height aspects.

To fit the canvas to the selection, select this tool from the Image menu.

Print Size

The Print Size tool is used to change the dimension of a printed image and its resolution. It opens a window for specifying the image print resolution; It does not affect the image pixel or resamples it. For resampling, the image, use the scale option from the Image menu.

Scale Image

The scale image option is used to enlarge or reduce the size of the image in the number of pixels. It changes the size of the image cont it applies to the entire image. To scale an image, select the scale image option from the Image menu. It will open a window asking the new size of the image.

Crop to Selection

The Crop to selection tool is used to crop the image from the selection. The partially selected areas will not be cropped. If the selection is feathered, the crop operation will be performed on the external feathered area. If there is no selection, this option will be disabled and grayed out.

To crop a selection, create a selection, and select the Crop to selection option from the Image menu.

Crop to Content

It is used to eliminate the borders from an image. In the earlier version of the GIMP, it was named “Autocrop image.” It searches for the significant area of the same color in the image and crops it. It works like a traditional crop tool.

To use this tool, select it from the image menu.

Slice Using Guides

It is used to slice up the current image based on the image’s guides. It crops the image according to the guide. It is a similar guillotine which is also known as image cutter.

To use this tool, select it from the image menu.

Zealous Crop

It is used to crop an image using a single solid color as a guide. It is similar to the Auto crop tool, but it also crops the image’s middle area with the same color.

To use this tool, select it from the image menu.

Merge Visible Layers

The Merge, Visible Layers tool, is used to merge the layers into a single layer. There are two types of layers in GIMP that are visible and hidden. A layer can be set as visible or hide by clicking on an eye icon on the layer.

Flattern Image

It is used to merge all of the image layers into a single layer with no transparency. The image will have the same appearance as it had before after the flatten image. But, it keeps all of the image contents are in a single layer without transparency. It makes remarkable changes to the entire structure of the image.

To use this tool, select it from the image menu.

Align Visible Layers

The Align Visible Layers tool is used to position the visible layers. It is useful when working on animations having many small layers. It displays a dialog for choosing the alignment of the layers.

Gimp Layers

The Gimp Layers are a stack of slides. Every layer contains a part of the image. Using layers, we can construct an image having several conceptual parts. The layers are used to manipulate a part of the image without affecting the other part. The bottom layer is the background of the image. It can be filled with the background or foreground color or transparent. All the components of the image come above it.

A layer can be hidden or visible. Later, we can merge all the layers to meet our requirements of the image.

An image can have any number of layers. There is no restriction on the number of layers.

The Layer menu contains various tools for manipulating layers.

Let’s understand each part of the layers in detail:

New Layer

The New Layer tool is used to add a new empty layer to the image layer stack. It adds the new layer at the top of the layer stack. It will open a window to define the layer properties such as height, weight, name, etc.

Enter the layer name and other values, then click ok to create a new layer. The layer name does not have any physical significance.

The color tag is useful if you have multiple layers. Tag a layer with a different color to identify it among other layers. The color tag can be seen at the eye icon of the layer.

New From Visible

This tool is used to merge the visible layers into a new layer. It will add at the top the layer stack. It is useful if you want to manipulate the result but want to keep the created steps. To use this tool, select it from the layer menu.

New Layer Group

The New Layer Group tool is used to create a new layer group. The layer group is useful for managing the layers. To group layers, select this option from the layer menu.

Duplicate Layer

This tool is used to add a new layer to the image, which is identical to the active layer. It will be named the same as the original layer name but appended the copy with its name. The background layer that does not have an alpha channel will be provided one by duplicating.

To duplicate a layer, select the duplicate layer option from the layer menu.

Merge Down

The Merge Down tool is used to merge the currently active layer with just below layer from the stack. It will observe it’s all the properties such as opacity and layer mode. This option is grayed out if there is no down layer; The resulting layer will be in normal mode.

Generally, it is used to merge down to create a new layer so that you can track what you are doing and edit it without affecting the original one. It will merge two layers into one without affecting its look.

To merge the layer with the below layer, select the merge down option from the layer menu.

Delete Layer

The Delete Layer tool is used to delete the active layer. To delete the current layer, select the delete layer option from the layer sub-menu.

Stack

The Stack tool is used to manage the layers from the layer stack. It provides options for selecting a new layer, changes the position of the layer, and more. If the image has a single layer, many of the stack options will be grayed out.

The stack sub-menu provides the following options:

  • Select the Previous Layer
  • Select Next Layer
  • Select Top Layer
  • Select Bottom Layer
  • Raise Layer
  • Lower Layer
  • Layer to Top

Select Previous Layer: This tool is used to select the layer just above the current layer in the layer stack. It highlights the layer and makes it as active. If there is no selection, this option will be grayed out.

Select Next Layer: This tool is used to select the layer just underneath the current layer in the layer stack. It highlights the layer and makes it as active. If there is no selection, this option will be grayed out.

Select Top Layer: This tool is used to select the topmost layer in the layer stack. It highlights the layer and makes it as active. If there is no selection, this option will be grayed out.

Select Bottom Layer: This tool is used to select the bottom layer in the layer stack. It highlights the layer and makes it as active. If there is no selection, this option will be grayed out.

Raise Layers: This tool is used to raise the layer one position in the layer stack. It highlights the layer and makes it as active. If there is no selection, this option will be grayed out.

Lower Layer: This tool is used to down layer one position in the layer stack. It highlights the layer and makes it as active. If there is no selection, this option will be grayed out.

Layer to Top: This tool is used to raise the active layer to the top of the layer stack. It highlights the layer and makes it as active. If there is no selection, this option will be grayed out. The layer cannot be raised If it is the lowest layer (bottom layer), and it does not have an alpha channel.

Layer to Bottom: This tool is used to down the active layer to the bottom of the layer stack. If there is no selection, this option will be grayed out.

Reverse Layer Order: This tool is used to reverse the layer order.

Mask

Layer masks are the essential tool in image manipulations, which is used to modify the layer’s opacity (transparency) selectively.

The Mask menu contains the following tools:

Show Layer Mask: It is used to display the existing layer mask. It will turn the image invisible. If there is no layer mask, this tool will be insensitive and grayed out.

Edit Layer Mask: This tool allows us to edit the existing layer mask. If there is no layer mask, this tool will be insensitive and grayed out.

Disable Layer Mask: This tool is used to disable an applied layer mask. If there is no layer mask, this tool will be insensitive and grayed out.

Mask to Selection: This tool is used to convert the active layer’s layer mask into a selection. It replaces the current selection that is active in the image.

Add to Selection: This tool is used to convert the layer mask of the active layer into a selection that is added to the selection.

Subtract from Selection: This tool is used to convert the layer mask of the active layer into a selection, subtracted from the selection.

Intersect from Selection: This tool is used to convert the active layer’s layer mask into a selection that is intersected from the selection.

The transparency tool is used to manage the transparency (alpha channel) of the image. The transparency sub-menu contains the following options:

Crop to Selection

The Crop to Selection tool is used to crop only the active layer to the selection boundary. It removes the strips at the edge whose contents are entirely unselected. It will not crop the partially selected area. If there is no selection, this option will be insensitive and grayed out.

Crop to Content

The Crop to the content tool is used to crop the active layer automatically. It is different from the Crop Tool, which lets us manually crop the specific area. It removes the largest possible area around the outside of the edge, having the same color.

Color Balance

It is used to alter the color balance of the current selection or layer. It is useful for correcting the primary colors in digital photos. It applies the color changes to the pixels.

We can adjust the color balance by selecting it from the Colors menu. It will open a dialog window that provides some basic options to select the range, adjust color level, preview, and other options.

Color Temperature

This tool allows us to set the color temperature of the light source in an image( in Kelvin). It is useful for adjusting the bluish cast for the overcast photos, or the red cast in photos. Usually, these effects may occur in a photo if it is taken in daylight.

Hue Chroma

The Hue Chroma tool is used to modify the saturation. This option will open a dialog window to specify the Hue and Chroma of the picture.

It is used to adjust the brightness and contrast of the selection or current layer. It is a straight forward tool and allows us to handle bright colors differently from the darker color. It is an excellent tool for quick adjustments to the images.

Levels

It is similar to the Histogram tool; the difference is that it adjusts the intensity range of the image in every channel. It is useful to make the image bright or dark. It opens a dialog window to define the color levels.

Curves

The Curves tool is one of the advanced tools of GIMP, which is used for changing the color, transparency, brightness, and contrast of the image. It is similar to the levels tool; the difference between both tools is that levels allow us to adjust the Shadows and Highlights, comparatively it allows us to adjust the tonal range.

Invert

It is used to invert all the pixel colors and brightness of the image. It converts the image in a negative format. So the darker area becomes brighter and vice-versa. To invert an image color format, select the invert tool from the colors menu.

To lighten the shadows and mid-tones of an image is an essential feature of photo editing. The tone mapping feature allows us to do this. The need for tone mapping and shadow highlights tool comes when dealing with the pictures clicked in direct sunlight.

GIMP provides a comprehensive toolbox for performing basic tasks such as selections, drawings, color picker, and many more. It provides many tools within its toolbox.

A tool is a way of operating on images. It indicates the specified action on hovering the cursor over the icon. A toolbox has several icons; each icon is a separate tool. To activate a tool, left-click on it or use key shortcuts.

GIMP offers the following tools:

Before diving in each tool in detail, let’s look at the GIMP user interface and toolbox:

A particular tool can be activated by clicking on a specific icon in the toolbox. GIMP does not provide direct tool icons for tools such as color tools that can be selected from the color menu or by navigating to tools -> Colors. But, every tool can be activated by stroking shortcut keys, which is unique for every tool.

We can add our frequently used tools in the toolbox. By default, every tool is not shown in the toolbox, but the toolbox can be customized using the tool menu.

When we select a tool, the pointer changes inside the image according to the active tool. It will work if we have set the pointer mode as a tool icon. The pointer mode can be changed by selecting the pointer mode option from Edit-> Preferences-> Image Windows-> Mouse Pointers-> menu.

Color and Tool options

The color indication and tool option dialogs are available at below the toolbox. It shows the default selection of colors like background color and foreground color, and tool options like mode, position, size, text color, etc.

Note: By default, The tool options dialog appears below the toolbox. If it is not available for any reason, it can be displayed by creating a new tool option. To create it, navigate to Windows-> Dockable dialogs-> Tools option and dock it to below the toolbox.

Selection Tools

The selection tools are used to select a region from a layer to work on them in a specified shape. All the selection tools can be accessed and added to toolbox from the Tools-> Selection tools.

selection tool allows us to extract the foreground from an active layer or image. It works on the SIOX method (Simple Interaction Object Extraction).

  • Roughly select the foreground with a dashed selection line as in free select. As the selection will be completed, the non selected background will be converted into a dark blue mask.
  • Draw a line on the foreground using a paintbrush for extracting:

Bucket Fill

Bucket fill used to fill the color to a selected region. The CTRL+click key combination allows us to fill the background color to the selected region. It will act according to tool options; it can fill the entire region or selected parts. It is also affected by the transparency options.

The ink tool is used to paint solid brush strokes with an anti-aliased edge. It uses a simulation of an ink pen with a controllable nib. We can set the size, shape, and angle of the nib.

The clone tool is used to copy a region from a current image or pattern. It uses the current brush for copying. It is a very useful tool for photo editing. One of this tool’s major use is to repair areas in digital photos by painting over them with a color pattern or background from other images. This tool seems a complicated tool, but it is a very powerful tool in photo editing.

To clone from an image, we must copy an area from that. To copy the area, select the clone tool, and hold the CTRL key and draw pointer on the desired image part very carefully that you want to copy. Now release the CTRL key and draw pointer on the area of the image where you want to draw the cloned part.

It is used to blur or sharpen the image. It uses the current brush, draw brush where you want to sharpen the image. It is useful to soften the elements, blur a whole layer, or a part of the image.

The sharpen mode increases the contrast where the brush is applied.

It is used to lighten or darken the colors on the image. It uses the current brush and draws the brush to make the dark or light color; The default mode will determine the type of pixels.

The scale tool is used to adjust the dimension of the image. When we select the scale tool, it displays a box having the scaling information. Set the values of the height and width and click on the scale. It will scale the image. We can also set the scaling values by dragging on the image.

The Re-Show last tool is also used to perform the last executed action with the same configuration. It is similar to repeat the last action, the difference between both the tools is it displays a dialog for configuration.

To perform the re-show last action, select it from the filters menu or stroke SHIFT+CTRL+F keys.

Reset All Filters

The Reset All Filters tool generally runs a plug-in and displays a dialog with all of the previously initialized settings. It is useful for recovering former setting values.

Blur

The Blur tool is used to blur the objects or parts of the image in different ways. It also works on a selection. There may be some leakage of colors from the unblurred area to the blurred area.

GIMP Fonts

GIMP supports a wide range of fonts. Some notable fonts are TrueType, OpenType and Type1. Fonts are useful for adding attractive text to the image. There are some preinstalled fonts available in GIMP; also, some fonts can be installed later.

Before adding some useful fonts in GIMP, let’s understand the font dialog box. The font dialog box can be seen in the text’s tool options menu. The tool GIMP menu contains fonts options which can be displayed by clicking on the Aa icon. It will list available font families.

We can select any of the given font family by clicking on it.

We can activate the fonts by navigating to the Windows-> Dockable dialogs-> Fonts menu. From this menu, we can select fonts, refresh the font list. If we add a new font, the list can be refreshed by the given refresh icon at the bottom of this menu. The CTRL+F keys provide a find button for finding the fonts. We can find a font family by typing the starting letter of it.also; we can type Aa for scrolling the complete list.

Adding Fonts in GIMP

GIMP supports the FreeType 2 font engine to provide fonts, and a Fontconfig system to manage them. It allows us to use any font in Fontconfig’s font path. It also allows us to use any of the available fonts from its search path. The search path can be set on the font folders page from the preference menu. By default, GIMP adds GIMP-fonts folders to its configuration directory in the search path. However, we can add new folders to the search path if it is useful for us.

FreeType 2 is a very robust and extensible font system. It provides the following font formats:

These fonts will take effect after restarting GIMP, but for any reason, if we are not able to find newly added fonts, we can refresh the font list.

Follow the below steps to add a brush in GIMP:

Step1: Find and Download a Brush Pack

The first step is to download a desired brush pack from the web. Let’s add a powder explosion brush pack. Download it from the given link and extract the zip file.

Step2: Locate the GIMP’s Brush Folder

Now, locate the GIMP’s Brush folder for pasting this brush package to the GIMP. In Linux, we can use the whereis gimp command to find its installation directory. In Windows, it can be found in C: drive>Program Files>GIMP.

Types of Brush In GIMP

The GIMP brushes are divided into the following two categories:

Ordinary brushes

The default GIMP brushes fall into this category. These brushes can be accessed from the Brushes dialog. When we start painting with these brushes, the current foreground color is substituted for black. Every brushes’ pixmap represents the marks that it draws on the image.

GIMP Layer Masks

Layer Masks are an essential tool in photo editing. They allow us to manage transparency and other components selectively. It is useful for removing the background of the image.

The layer masks can be three types white, black, or Gray, representing full transparency, full opacity, or partial transparency. So the layer mask makes the image transparent, opaque and partially transparent. This layering effect is non-destructive.

The different layer masks are used for different level opacity and transparency, such as white for absolute opacity, black for absolute transparency, and gray for partial opacity/transparency.

How to Add a Mask to a Layer

Before adding a layer mask to an image, adding a layer to the image is necessary. Open an image that we want to edit by navigating the File-> Open menu. We can open the image by other options or by dragging and dropping from another window as well.

Now add a layer to the current image by clicking on the add layer icon at the bottom of layer dialog:

Modify the Transparency Using Layer Mask

We can modify the image’s transparency and color effect using a layer mask as we have selected the white (Full Opacity) layer mask. So, we can manage transparency accordingly.

To modify the transparency, select any selection tool from the Tools-> Selection Tools menu. We are using the rectangle select tool. But, we can use any tools such as brush, fuzzy selection, or any other tool.

To modify the transparency, follow the below steps:

The GIMP deselect tool is used to deactivate the currently selected tool. While working on GIMP, it is crucial to deactivate the currently selected tool to avoid accidental changes in the image. We can deselect using the None selection tool.

Second Method:

There is another method to create GIFs. We can also do the same by using the optimized ( For GIF) option. To create a GIF, open all the images we want to put in GIF using the open layers option. Both the option produces the same result.

Now select the optimize ( For GIF) by navigating the Filters-> Animation menu. It will reduce all the images’ size, remove the overlapping between images, and make it compatible with the GIF format.

When we are done with all the things, save the file using the Export As option with the “.gif” extension. Select the animation and loop forever options. Next, and the final thing is to specify the delay time. After specifying all the things, now export the image.

We can check our GIF file in our file manager. If the file’s speed and size are not as expected, change it by the GIMP using the same process and save the image again.

How to Remove Background of the Image?

The remove the background of the image is also another demanded and useful tasks for the photo editing. Sometime our favorite image may have an annoying background. We can fix this issue by adding an attractive GIMP background with the use of a few tools.

We will remove the background by following steps:

Step1: Add Transparency to the Image

To add transparency to the image, add the alpha channel to it. Select the Alpha Channel option from the Layer-> Transparency-> Add Alpha Channel menu. It will add the alpha channel and make the background transparent so that we can place a new one.

Step2: Select the Object

Now, Select the object that we want to keep using the free selection tool. Use the free select tool and select it from the Tools-> Selection Tools-> Free Select menu.

How to Save the image in different formats in GIMP (Export)?

After all the basic editing operations, we have to save it. To save in different formats such as JPEG, JPG, TIFF, GIF, or any other format, we have to use the Export As option form the file menu. The Save and Save As option will save the file in GIMP’s default format, which is “.Xcf”.

When we select the Export As an option, it will open a dialog window to specify the file format and location.

Either we can Specify the file extension with the file name or access the supported file formats from a drop-down list. At the bottom of the Export As dialog window, we can see the select file type (By extension) option. We can expand it for browsing a drop-down list.
